Just three days after the untimely and tragic passing of Michael Jackson, the BET Awards and its three and half hours joyous tribute kicked off Sunday night at Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, as the annual event was transformed into a musical farewell to the King of Pop. This is the ninth time of the annual BET Awards, and hosted by Jamie Foxx.Michael's father Joe was on hand to represent the family. "I just wish he could be here to celebrate himself," he said. "Sadly, he's not here, so I'm here to celebrate for him." Janet Jackson has taken the stage at the BET Awards to speak on behalf of her grieving family and thank fans for their love and support. She said: "My entire family wanted to be here tonight, but it was just too painful, so they elected me to be here."
Beyonce won "Best Female R&B Artist", Ne-Yo got "Best Male R&B Artist", Lil Wayne receives "Best Male Hip-Hop Artist", "Best Female Hip Hop Artist" goes to M.I.A., Keri Hilson is awarded with "Best New Artist", and Jamie Foxx shares a prize with T-Pain for Best Collaboration at 2009 BET Awards.
