Sky Ferreira goes thug life in "I Blame Myself"

Sky Ferreira gets in a pretty dangerous-looking area of Compton in a 90s gangsta rap-inspired stylish video for "I Blame Myself," with some help from online fashion retailer SSENSE, who styled her for the shoot. The fault-admitting track is the second single from the 21-year-old singer's debut album "Night Time, My Time," which Rolling Stone, The New Yorker or The Guardian had no trouble calling one of the best album of the last year. The new clip sees Ferreira plays with gender dynamics in gang culture, a context in which her punky pop has likely never been considered. The juxtaposition, as it turns out, speaks to a larger message about power and vulnerability.
After more than five years as a rising pop star, Ferreira must be used to her singles going underappreciated, and "I Blame Myself" was the most underappreciated track and arguably the best song off her already great debut album. Indebted less to '90s alt than the kind of sparkly, introspective pop that's not tied to any decade - like Ferreira's own "Everything Is Embarrassing" - it was both immediate and searing, sparing no fury for the intersection of condescension, sexualization and she encountered while churning through the major-label teen pop machine, while never being obvious. It goes right for the throat: of its targets, of its hooks.
Ferreira's searing, wounded synthpop anthem finds she singing: "How could you know what it feels like to fight the hounds of hell / You think you know me so well? / I blame, I blame myself... for my reputation." Ferreira's "I Blame Myself," is a ’90s-throwback, West Coast hip-hop look and feel that gets its power from its extreme vulnerability. The lyrics detail the frustration of being a face without a voice, with Ferreira ultimately taking responsibility for the way her actions have been misconstrued over the years. The song speaks to the icky truths we may not want to admit to ourselves, because we know we shouldn't take the blame and yet we still think that way.
Filmed in Compton by Grant Singer, the clip starts with a gang boss taking care of business. The singer appears as a kind of gang leader, called up to settle a dispute. There's the shots of her chilling on the hood of a car with her boys, riding along, and ultimately, all of them doing a choreographed dance routine that looks like something of a late-'90s boy-band video. As the video goes on, we see that Ferreira subsequently gets arrested and interrogated. It ends up approaching the same "wimpy pop star coming off as totally badass" vibe that Michael Jackson channeled in "Bad." Needless to say, it is great. Sky Ferreira unveiled "You're Not The One"

Sky Ferreira has shared a new dark and dancey clip in the form of a stylish and artfully lit music video for her song "You're Not the One," the tune serves as the lead single from Ferreira's upcoming long-gestating major-label debut album, "Night Time, My Time" which is currently available for pre-order in the lead up to its official release on October 29th through Capitol Records, following a trio of EPs from the 21-year-old synth-pop artist. Things may have gone up in flames in Ferreira's personal life over the weekend, but there's hope on the horizon yet for the embattled songbird.
After a long journey through the music industry, pop singer Ferreira is finally ready for releasing her much-discussed, much-much-much delayed debut album, which was initially called "I Will" and was supposed to be out during the summer. If you're into starting your day with a little electro-pop, Ferreira's new single will be right up your alley. A characteristically moody slice of electro-pop produced by L.A.'s Ariel Rechtshaid, the electro-pop anthem "You're Not The One," is a fluttery, immaculately produced '80s-style breakup jam, and an 80s leather-and-lights revenge fantasy against the guy who's not the one.
Ferreira said of the song: "The production is super-inspired by Low by David Bowie [...] I wanted to make a super-poppy version. Like not when you're rolling up your car windows because you don't want anyone to know you're listening to it. Like trying to hide it in your iTunes. Ariel had the idea. People say it sounds like Siouxsie Sioux. I guess the song was originally about a relationship when you're not chasing after them. You know they're kind of fucked up. It's like a game of cat and mouse. They're interested but not interested enough and it's not fair. That's basically what it should be called, 'It's Not Fair.'"
The dusky video set in some high-fashion night club, from director Grant Singer, who also worked on the video for her breakout single, "Everything Is Embarrassing," tells the story of an ill-fated nightclub romance and details a night of betrayal and heartbreak inside of a laser-light discotheque, until the very end. The visuals see Ferreira performing in a club-like environment before waking up confused and bruised in a field the next morning. Then again, perhaps this clip isn't the one to turn to for comfort, given that it depicts a rather grim episode in a dimly lighted nightclub in which Ferreira pokes a guy in the neck with an ice pick figures prominently.

Sky Ferreira Has A Creepy In "Obsession" Video

MTV has the official video for the Portuguese-American indie-popper Sky Ferreira's U.S. debut single "Obsession." Ferreira has been getting plenty of fans obsessed over her, so the choice of "Obsession" as her first single seems appropriate. The new track is featured on "The Vampire Diaries: Original" Television Soundtrack. "Ferreira" is just a taste of the 18-year-old has to offer on her yet-to-be titled debut full-length album, which is slated for a 2011 release. Ferreira has done some wild stuff in the past. I guess I expected something more than a straightforward pop song for her first single.
The ryan tedder-produced "Obsession" is a catchy-enough electro-pop ditty with an anthemic chorus of "I want you to want me!" etc, doesn't hold a candle to the magic that is her impeccable & perfect bloodshy & avant-produced "one" (Ferreira's debut track in Europe), but "Obsession" sure is catchy, and will surely race up the charts stateside as a nice introduction to an artist with lots of potential. Even this new video shows off a little bit of what makes Ferreira so unique. The song “Obsession” sounds like your typical pop ditty that you would hear your everyday teenage girl sing along to but the video has a unique twist that you wouldn’t expect.
Ferreira sat down with Punchbowl TV recently for a new interview to her US single "Obsession," which she still appears to hate despite weakly trying to pretend that she actually loves it. "“It [Obsession] was pitched to like Rihanna, Adam Lambert, like all these huge people. But whatever, another man's trash is another person's treasure [laughs]. I had to compromise with it. I mean, love the song and it's very poppy and stuff, but it's um... I think I just wanted to try something a little different at first, but, you know, I'll do what I have to do to get out. I mean, I don't, like, hate the song — well, some parts of it I don't like it."
Somewhere on the junction of creepy and cute, you will find the video of "Obsession." The video was directed by Marc Klasfel and features Ferreira being fanatically obsessed with Tarantino tough-guy actor Michael Madsen. In video, her love for actor becomes just that: an obsession. She basically becomes the black sheep out of her group of friends as the lines of reality and fantasy are blurred. While her friends party and makeout with boys their own age, Ferreira is off daydreaming about the Kill Bill actor. Every inch of her bedroom wall is covered with his face. She gets his name tattooed on her arm. She tracks down where he lives. She's completely and utterly obsessed. Instead of going the traditional "pop girl fancies hot guy" route, Ferreira flipped the switch on us and She's irked with the "mean girl" in her circle of pals. She finds a star map, tracks him down and dreams about the two of them taking revenge on one of her idiot friends. Great video!
