Charli XCX gets back at her man in "Breaking Up"

Charli XCX is red hot while holding a hunk hostage in a brand new music video for her 90's-inspired pop/rock track, "Breaking Up," off her upcoming punk rock-inspired sophomore album "Sucker," is expected to be released on December 16. When discussing the album Charli states that while the album is still pop, "it's a very shouty, girl power, girl gang, sort of feel." The cartoony video definitely fits that description with Charli's bad chick attitude in it.
This slice of brat-pop finds Charli bashing her former lover. "That song is really brutal - every time I sing it I feel bad for everyone of my ex-boyfriends," she explained. "I feel like I'm making all the guys I ever dated cry," Charli added. "Which I kind of like." Obviously, the 22-year-old English singer likes to destroy them really bad with a hammer! Well, only if you're her boyfriend and you mistreat her.
The ultra-colorful BRTHR-directed video opens with vintage Charli listening to her boyfriend prattle on to his parents about how every girl in school wants to be with him. After tossing her drink onto the ground and shattering it, she lowers her cat eye sunglasses and says "we had a good run, Patrick" with an infinitely bored expression on her face. After she breaks up with her football star boyfriend, she hops into limo with her girlfriends and begins her girl power and feistiest breakup anthem.
The rest of the video takes place at a bowling alley and entails generous hair flipping while Charli belts out the lyrics and playing bowling with close gal pals and enjoying sweets. Throughout the chorus of the song she proclaims "you say you love me, I say what?" These simple yet sassy lyrics affirm the fact that this song is letting the world that she doesn't need to be on the arm of a guy to be confident. The style of the video is dripping with the 90s revival aesthetic that millennials are begging for these days and Charli makes it look ridiculously fun that gives off all of the ultra-cool dark pop vibes that the song does.

Charli XCX Gets Rebellious in "Break the Rules"

You already know Charli XCX from her verses on buzzy songs like Iggy Azalea's "Fancy" and Icona Pop's "I Love It," as well as for her "Fault In Our Stars" soundtrack cut "Boom Clap." Now, the British alt-pop singer is setting out for solo stardom with a new prom themed video for her bass-heavy track, "Break the Rules," the lead cut from the 22-year-old British songstress' upcoming sophomore album, "Sucker," due out on October 21st. It's time to go back to school! And Charli is a rebellious yet popular girl at her high school, and we've gotta say: This is one rebel you'll want to watch out for.
The new teenager/F-the system anthem is an anti-pep-rally ode to getting high and getting wrecked, and finds Charli and her misfit crew unenthused about the impending new school year. "I don't want to go to school/ I just want to break the rules." Charli explained: "The song is inspired by a lot of the things I was listening to whilst in Sweden at the end of last year, I spent about a month making a punk record and covering songs by Swedish punk bands like Snuffed By The Yakuza and stuff. This song was written when I came out of the other side of that punk phase and translated it into something more pop," she added. "Obviously, it's about not giving a f**k."
Charli always has fun but stylishly shot videos, whether it's the lo-fi intimacy of "What I Like" or the Amsterdam-based "Boom Clap," and her latest, for "Break The Rules," is another striking visual that doesn't take itself too seriously. Playing off the song's theme of teenage rebellion, the video casts Charli 'as the leader of a high school crew who are breaking the rules and having fun, from hijacking a school bus to hit up a lingerie store and ending up at a very messy prom night, which features a cameo from actress Rose McGowan as a ruler-smacking chaperone. The highlight is the grand finale - a playful twist to a Stephen King horror classic.
In the end, they will all get involuntarily covered in disgusting pink slime, but instead of having it kill their mood, they embrace the moment, and love it. Speaking about the video to Charli told Billboard: "I was inspired by movies like 'Jawbreaker' and 'Carrie' for the 'Break the Rules' video. I never went to prom when I was at school so this was kind of me living out my weird fantasy of what prom would be like in my head. I asked Rose McGowan to be in the video and I never ever thought she would say yes, but she did... so she came to prom too... And she trashed it"

Charli XCX wanders around city in "Boom Clap"

Charli XCX, who recently scored her first U.S. No.1 thanks to Iggy Azalea's "Fancy," has premiered the Amsterdam-set music video via MTV.com for her solo new song "Boom Clap," which is the British pop singer's contribution to the soundtrack of "The Fault in Our Stars." It's an appropriate choice for the unorthodox love story between Hazel Grace (Shailene Woodley) and Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort). The romantic comedy-drama film adaptation of John Green's best-selling novel follows the lives of two cancer patients as they fall in love, suffer, and celebrate together.

It's about time for Charli to have a huge hit under her own name. The mastermind behind Icona Pop's "I Love It" is currently atop the Billboard Hot 100 as the scene-stealer on Iggy Azalea's The New Classic single "Fancy," but this "SuperLove"-worthy electro-pop burst sees her back on her own. Instead of an emotional love song, this upbeat, '80s-sounding pop hit is more of a toe-tapping love anthem than a tear-filled ballad. "The scene that ['Boom Clap'] is in is an uplifting moment in the film, Charli explained to Billboard magazine. "And while the song itself is very euphoric and enthusiastic about romance… it's about wanting to fall in love, but there's this hint of sadness in that, which I like."

The 21-year-old singer-songwriter shot the video in Amsterdam, where "The Fault in Our Stars" was partially filmed in too. Interspersed with dramatic footage, cartoonish scenes and snippets from the movie, the "Boom Clap" clip goes between colorfully doodled-around shots and features Charli enjoying herself and traipsing around the city while wondrous graphics frame her face, as the Brit croons while riding on a boat, gets lost in a sea of bikes, walks the streets, and poses on various canal bridges. The ending of the video - the pop singer strolling off down the sidewalk - is presumably more upbeat than the ending of "The Fault In Our Stars."

The singer-producer's video is one of these soundtrack videos that haphazardly alternates movie footage with footage of its star. But the video still has a ton of Charli dancing around Amsterdam and looking mad charismatic. If "boom clap" is "the sound of my heart," as the True Romance-r belts out here, she shouldn't be alone in that particular cardiac condition. By the way, although "Boom Clap" hasn't been sent to radios, not it's charting high on iTunes presently, it will presumably appear on the U.K. singer-songwriter's sophomore LP, due out later this year.

Iggy Azalea, Charli XCX got 'Clueless' for "Fancy"

Nearly 20 years after "Clueless" hit theaters, Iggy Azalea pays homage and brings a new attitude to the 1995 cult classic in the throwback video for "Fancy," co-starring British alt-pop songbird Charli XCX with the bragging on the rowdy hook. The Aussie rap queen rules the halls of Beverly Hills High School as socialite Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone) in the X-directed clip. The blonde bombshell went back into the memory vaults and filmed at the same high school where "Clueless" was shot, inviting 250 fans to be a part of the video.
Azalea rocked a '90s wardrobe straight out of Cher's designer closet and even shut down the freeway while recreating one scene. This is the best thing ever! We are just so behind this, we can't even tell you. Naturally, Azalea is our Cher and she brought Charli XCX along with her to sing the chorus and stand in for Tai. Not only do we get the opening debate scene, but snippets of tennis practice, the party, and the hallway cell-phone strut. Azalea and co. even went through the trouble of recreating the freeway scene, complete with swerving Mac trucks. That's dedication and it works like gangbusters.
This bouncy hip-pop song itself, is all about the high-flash, high-glam, high-cost lifestyle, finds Azalea letting the world know why she's the hottest female rapper in the game over a stripped back production driven by a retro-induced synth. The song was premiered on Mistajam's BBC Radio 1Xtra show on February 6 and released as the fourth single from Azalea’s long-awaited solo debut, "The New Classic," is due out on April 15 featuring collaborations with T.I., Mavado, Watch the Duck, and Katy Perry, who co-wrote her next single. The Aussie rapper makes a case for why she's "The New Classic."
The clip is basically a throwback to that absolute '90s teen blockbuster 'Clueless,' and takes us all the way back to 1995, when Alicia Silverstone was just a valley girl with a heart of gold. But Azalea, isn't some ditzy blonde, instead she's making it clear she's a girl with some expensive taste, and exudes confident sex appeal, flipping her golden locks relentlessly and shaking it in her pleated skirt. But all Azalea really wants is to solidify her fancy status. The fun, high school party scene takes the video to a whole new level, thanks to some red cups, cute choreo and classic teenage debauchery. It's clear that Azalea is working harder than ever and making a play to become Queen Bee of female MCs.

Charli XCX dance with robots with "SuperLove"

Charlotte Emma Aitchison, better known by her stage name Charli XCX is wasting no time keeping the momentum flowing since the release of her eclectic debut "True Romance" earlier this year, she's already getting ready to follow it up with another one. There aren't many details out there for the next record, but she's shared a flirty colorful video as she spends a night out with the girls in Tokyo for the fizzy, club-happy new track, "SuperLove," the first single from Charli's upcoming sophomore major label album, that’s planned for release in March 2014.
Follow-up to the song she wrote for Icona Pop and worldwide hit single "I Love It," the shiny pop tune "SuperLove" has more of a big-room nightclub feel than anything on her debut "True Romance." "'SuperLove' is a song about running away and falling in love with someone," the 21-year-olf London alt-pop goddess explained, "and it being really dangerous and bad for you but still amazing, romantic and wonderful. 'SuperLove' is the best drug and this song is about overdosing on it and falling in real deep." Charli added that the song was influenced by artists like Bow Wow Wow, The Waitresses and The Flying Lizards as well as "those Lolita-esque bratty French girls and other girl power heroines."
"SuperLove" is pure, unadulterated pop at its finest and doubles down on the luxurious alt-pop and drug metaphors of "True Romance" highlights. Charli has nailed everything that's great about modern pop music with this uptempo electro ditty, putting her contemporaries to shame. "Super Love" has a touch of the 90s to it, which shouldn’t come as a surprise considering Charli's affinity for the decade. Shiny and playful, Charli's kicked another goal with "SuperLove." And this one is all jangly and peppy, guitars intermingling with her glo-fi sonics and her rapid-fire singing style.
The vivid, disco-infused crazy-fun video was shot in Tokyo's Robot Restaurant by Charli's boyfriend Ryan Andrews. It features Charli and friends strut through Tokyo, hanging out and get into some mischievous activity that includes dancing with robots in a neon club/funhouse, all while dressed like the world's most stylish candystriper and even corralling motorcycle gangs at the end. It's an entertaining video with Charli's words describing a relationship that could get her into some trouble. "I Wanna fall into your superlove/Yeah my heart never wants it to stop, please save me/'Cause I never seem to get enough/you're the bullet and you're making me drop, please save me," she spits lines.
