MS MR perform "Think of You" in a retro TV show

MS MR have returned to the small screen via their media-critiquing brilliant VHS-themed video for "Think of You," the latest cut to be lifted from the alt-pop group's debut album, "Secondhand Rapture." The promotional cycle behind Brooklyn pop group MS MR's "Secondhand Rapture" apparently started many years ago on public access television, at least according to the retro-styled "Think of You" video, which seems to have a particularly intense effect on a little boy who is watching. MS MR are definitely spoiling their fans with such an unbeatable flow of impressive releases - this time.
The love-spurned New Yorkers' dark, entrancing debut album, "Secondhand Rapture," had its share of deceptively epic moments, but the chorus on the get-over-him track "Think Of You" may be the album's most grand pop gesture. Now the song has gotten the video treatment, and while it's not as unsettling as the videos for duo's previous singles, "Hurricane" and "Fantasy," it's just as visually arresting and off-kilter. "Think Of You," finds some middle ground between the bizarre and the nostalgic: public access television has never looked so neon.
Directed by BRTHR, the accompanying music video that starts off pretty tame and transitions into a colorful splash of vintage madness and it includes one flaming keyboard, one creepy little kid, and one guy with a TV for a head smashing a TV. The clip finds a young boy spending his afternoon in front of a dial-driven TV set, peeping pastiches to Bob Ross's The Joy of Painting, spandex-heavy fitness programs and even a headbanging send-up of Wayne's World. Also on the menu is a televised performance of MS MR's new, or is it old, single.
We're brought back to old-school public TV as they perform on what looks like an 80's VHS-era game show. vocalist Lizzy Plapinger and producer Max Hershenow performing the venom-spewing kiss-off tune on a retro television's fictional talk show. The young boy watches from his living room before he's literally sucked into the TV to enjoy the song in the flesh, becoming one with the colorful, trippy, VHS-like short. MS MR feel sense of hopelessness in "Hurricane"

MS MR is the sort of Internet-age pop project that begs to be blogged about, and we've always loved the way MS MR manage to evoke a sense of looming weirdness in their music through MS Lizzy Plapinger's saccharine-sweet vocals and MR Max Hershenow's haunted production, their songs tend to sound like they're seeing something you're not that's lurking just beneath the surface. The shadowy NYC duo knocked weird out of the park in new video for their breakout single, "Hurricane," that manages to pretty accurately capture this vibe – it's a David Lynchian tale of a small town full of strange bodies and it's a fantastic but glittery nightmare video.
While fellow New York indie pop duo Cults looks to the 60s for inspiration, upstarts MS MR have firmly planted themselves in the heart of 90s chick pop. MS MR describe themselves as "Tumblr Glitch Pop, Soul Fuzz, Electroshock," and so it is fitting that its music video is a mesmerizing, thought provoking collage of the coolest kids and pics on Tumblr. The combination of the melancholy, spaced-out sound and the flickering Tumblr images creates an almost sad and bittersweet image of the online world in which we live. "Welcome to the inner workings of my mind," the lyrics enhance the idea of the online self and the seductiveness of sites.
"Hurricane" is their best release yet. Lyrically, it feels beset by a sense of hopelessness, but sounds as though it should soundtrack a heroine turning triumphantly on a heel as the credits roll. There is something vintage about MS MR's new track "Hurricane." The uncomplicated beat and the sweet, clear female voice take you back to a simpler time, but in all its blogging, tweeting glory, it's also so 2012. It's a great track with a really sweet, catchy chorus, which still manages to create quite an intriguing and nostalgic feel. Take a bit of Lana del Ray, Florence and the Machine and Kavinsky, rewind to 1996 and you're getting there.
With "Hurricane," electro pop duo want to invite you to a world where your body and the surrounding world manifests your perversions and anxieties into surreal excretions, bodily corruptions, and occasionally a gym pal. Sound good? Candy Bar Creep Show is out now. The clip is everything weird and abstract and beautiful, in which Plapinger's got bright blue skin, Hershenow's neck exudes smoke, a kid works out next to a silver alien, a cheerleader melts like ice cream, someone's boyfriend's mouth exudes slime. It undeniably conjures up images that feel like an extension of their album art Candy Bar Creep Show. Simultaneously dark and twisty and rejuvenating, welcome to the inner workings of MS MR's mind.

MS MR channeling dark weirdness in "Fantasy"

Primed for a 2013 breakout is New York-based indie-pop duo MS MR, who reaches previously unknown heights with the release of their stellar debut track "Fantasy" only a week ago, and have quickly followed up with the brilliant, glitter-puking video for the song and it's pretty fantastic. The track is the first single from their forthcoming full-length debut album, "Second Hand Rapture," is scheduled to grace our ears and dancefloors and mood swings on May 14, should be an absolute monster. Fantasy was a happy find!
And my reality could never live up to my fantasy. If only reality was as beautiful as the way MS MR, lead singer Lizzy Plapinger and producer Max Hershenow, envision it, but leave it to them to have glitter-vomitting cheerleaders in their video and make it look so magical. MS MR is how they spin darker lyrics and emotions into a sweeping pop tune that can just run and their ability to carry this perspective over into pulsating videos that breathe new life into an already great song. Honestly, who needs reality when we have MS MR to capture such a great fantasy?
"Fantasy," a tense, brooding stormer with a hypnotic chorus, is a dark little jam with smooth vocals and a strong Florence + The Machine feel, without the Gothicness, that's far too powerful to be brought down by an unspectacular video. With each passing drop-off, it's clear that the somewhat mysterious tandem is getting better and better. "Fantasy" is no different, accounting for an undeniably enchanting number focusing in on vocals this go around. Clearly, Plapinger's voice sounds full and lovely, the piano and hand claps are infectious, and it just has the buoyant feel of a well assembled pop song.
Channeling dark Lynchian weirdness in "Fantasy," trading pointed glances from across a diner as cheerleaders vigorously vomiting up glitter in the parking lot outside and the duo singing along in a diner which is a pleasant surprise considering how notoriously mysterious they are. "Shot on location in Jamaica, Queens with talented director Austin Peters, the clip for 'Fantasy' stays true to the main themes and questions behind the track: things we imagine or think we understand are not as they appear. The clip presents a world filled with fantasies gone wrong where the mundane, the surreal and the supernatural are all intertwined and what is real becomes a matter of perspective," MS MR explained.
