Miley Cyrus Defiles Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go"

Adding to her stellar portfolio of recordings, Miley Cyrus has released a new music video for her country-fied cover of "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go," her contribution to the folk legend Bob Dylan tribute four-disc collection "Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International," which has just released yesterday, and features covers by Adele, Darren Criss, Ke$ha, Natasha Bedingfield, Maroon 5, and it will benefit Amnesty's life-saving human rights work.
"You're Going to Make Me Lonesome When You Go," is one of the more plaintive tracks off the rock & roll legend's classic Blood on the Tracks. Cyrus may be known for her hit songs like "The Climb" and "Party in the U.S.A.," but it's her latest song that truly shows you what a great singer she actually is. Cyrus rose to the occasion, proving she's capable of genres beyond pop and that she thrives vocally in a folk/country environment.
In the "Can't Be Tamed" singer's most mature move yet, she performs heartfelt, country-twinged rendition of the classic song, and it makes a certain kind of sense - Cyrus is trying to transition to a post-Disney life, and nothing screams "I'M SERIOUS!" more than an earnest Bob Dylan cover. Her version isn't bad, more country than Dylan's take but certainly pleasant enough with the steel guitar and the Southern twang. The track shows off a more mature, lovely side of her. Beautifully phrased.
The no frills video fits the low-key song, which features nothing more than shots of the 19-year-old dresses down in a sleeveless vest and ripped jeans and sitting on a stool in the middle of an abandoned house in an otherwise empty room, crooning her heart out the mournful ballad alongside guitarist Johnzo West, while additional musicians accompany the star from other rooms, putting the focus right where Dylan would want it - on the song itself. It's plain, simple and smart. The subdued video shows fans a new side of the young singer. It's a completely different kind of party in the U.S.A.
